OWINGS MILLS, Md. — A day after quarterback Lamar Jackson said defenses were calling out the Baltimore Ravens‘ plays, offensive coordinator Greg Roman chalked it up to the same outdated chess match that occurs for the duration of video games.
“Calling out plays on the defense is nothing unusual,” Roman said Thursday. “They’ll be correct most ceaselessly [and] they’ll be wrong most ceaselessly. I feel everyone is conscious of that. But that is definitely a share of the sport. It continuously has been and presumably continuously may be.”
The Ravens’ offense is within the middle of a critical plunge-off from final season, falling from No. 2 in yards per sport in 2019 to No. 23 on the halfway point of the 2020 season. On Wednesday, Jackson told “The Smartly off Eisen Show camouflage” that Baltimore is simply too predictable on offense, asserting, “They’re calling out our plays, stuff love that. They know what we’re doing.”
Requested about the reigning NFL MVP’s comments, Roman gave a two-minute response that started with how Jackson is a gargantuan competitor who wants to grab every sport and each play.
“He unquestionably affords me feedback on when participants are calling something out and whatnot,” Roman said. “That’s unquestionably section of what we focus on.”
Is Jackson allowed to audible when he hears defenders calling out plays?
“There is unquestionably some plays the put apart these audibles are on hand and inbuilt,” Roman said. “Some quarterbacks audible or comprise the freedom to audible every play. As soon as in some time that works out well for them, most ceaselessly it doesn’t. Some participants develop no longer enact it at all. I would roar we’re somewhere in between there.”
The Ravens’ struggles can no longer all be blamed on the playcalling. Accidents comprise hit the offensive line, the put apart two starters — left style out Ronnie Stanley and proper guard Tyre Phillips — are on injured reserve. This comes after Pro Bowl correct guard Marshal Yanda retired within the offseason. Plus, Jackson has been extra improper this season (26th in completion percentage) and Baltimore’s huge receivers comprise nearly as many drops by eight video games this year (nine) as all of ultimate season (10).
Silent, there has been increasing frustration for the duration of the Baltimore offense this season. After the Ravens’ 28-24 loss to the Pittsburgh Steelers on Nov. 1, huge receiver Marquise “Hollywood” Brown vented in a since-deleted tweet that he isn’t getting dilapidated satisfactory within the passing sport. Now Jackson made it public that Baltimore is being too deliberate on offense.
“We’re very responsive to our developments,” Roman said. “We’re mindful that there are some now, and that is the explanation the put apart it gets inspiring. If you are factual at something and you would also aid urgent that button, then you unquestionably will comprise the different to flip the script at some point intriguing forward.”
