Lynchburg alumni: rename phase of building named for Falwell

LYNCHBURG, Va. (AP) — Dilapidated students of the College of Lynchburg in Virginia want to diminish ties with Liberty College and rename phase of a building dedicated to the leisurely Rev. Jerry Falwell.

The Richmond Times-Dispatch stories that an online petition has got more than 700 signatures.

Dilapidated students pointed to what they described as a protracted history of bigoted remarks by Liberty College’s founder.

“His values earn no longer align with what the College of Lynchburg says they want to be,” acknowledged Johnathan Harris, a 2002 graduate who wrote a letter to varsity management. “His rhetoric represented that of racism, bigotry, placism and sexism except the closing day.”

Falwell’s name is on a plaque on the rooftop terrace of the recent 90,000-sq.-foot Westover Corridor, a $22 million situation hall that opened closing fall and became once in-constructed phase with money donated by Liberty.

Jerry Falwell Jr., who took over the presidency of Liberty College in 2007, disputed the claims that his father became once a bigot.

“My father cherished each person however he did comprise determined theological beliefs and he expressed them and he became once very vocal about them,” Falwell Jr. told the newspaper. “However that’s theological; it’s nothing to earn and not using a longer loving other folks.”
