Man who unlocked 1.9 million AT&T phones sentenced to 12 years in reformatory

A US district court has sentenced a person that unlocked 1.9 million AT&T phones to 12 years in reformatory. Muhammad Fahd persisted the seven-yr plan to defraud the corporate even after studying of an investigation against him, per the Department of Justice. At Fahd’s sentencing listening to, Hang Robert S. Lasnik said he dedicated a “monstrous cybercrime over an extended period,” with AT&T said to have lost $201.5 million which ability.

Fahd contacted an AT&T employee through Facebook in 2012 and bribed them to help him liberate customers’ phones with “critical sums of money,” the DOJ said. Fahd, a citizen of Pakistan and Grenada, entreated the employee to recruit co-workers at a Bothell, Washington call heart for the plan too.

The DOJ says the employees unlocked phones for “ineligible customers,” who paid Fahd a payment. In spring 2013, AT&T rolled out a machine that made it more complicated for the employees to liberate IMEIs. Fahd then recruited an engineer to gain malware that will most likely be set up in on AT&T’s systems to help him liberate phones more efficiently and remotely. The DOJ says the employees gave Fahd particulars about the corporate’s systems and unlocking how to help that project. The malware is alleged to have received facts about the machine and other AT&T workers’ gain entry to credentials. The developer light those particulars to alter the malware.

AT&T claims Fahd and his associates unlocked most attention-grabbing over 1.9 million phones through the plan. The corporate says on myth of the unlocks, customers didn’t total payments on their devices, ensuing within the nine-resolve loss.

Fahd used to be arrested in Hong Kong in 2018 following a 2017 indictment. He used to be extradited to the US and pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud in September 2020.
